Passing score for ECBA Exam

This is one of the most commonly asked question for everyone, who is intending to take up IIBA ECBA Exam. What is the score I should get to get certified? Well, there is no official word from International Institite of Business analysis (IIBA). In this post, I will answer this question as well as explain its implication for the test takers.

My answer is based on the ECBA Certified professionals, who took the ECBA course or test series from Techcavass or through LinkedIn group members. Based on these feedbacks, the passing score for ECBA exam can be put in the range of 60-70%. A word of caution though. IIBA can change this at any point in time.

So, what does it mean and how can you use this information?

We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.

How is this information useful to me?

Business analysis body of knowledge (BABOK) is the official IIBA Book. You need to read this book to clear the exam as questions are based on the content of this book. This book is divided into multiple chapters. There are six knowledge areas and each of the knowledge areas has a defined weightage for the ECBA exam. The ECBA exam has 50 questions. The table below shows the wightage of each knowledge area along with the expected number of questions in the exam.

Knowledge Area ECBA Exam % Weightage No of Questions
Business Analysis planning and moitoring
5%
30
Elicitation and Collaboration
20%
107
Requirement lifecycle and management
20%
111
Strategy Analysis
5%
35
Requirements Analysis and design definition
24%
105
Solution Evaluation
1%
16

The most important implication of the above information is that you can be selective in your preparation. You can easily take a selective approach. For example, even if you completely skip strategy analysis and solution evaluation knowledge areas, you will only skip 3 questions. However, these two chapters take up 58 pages in BABOK, around 12%.

Secondly, it also means that if we consider the passing score for ECBA exam to be, let's say, 65% - it means that you need to get 50 X 65% = 32 questions right in the exam.
